Spring 2024: Google ended its email subscription service in 2021. I believe I've found a replacement, but haven't had time to test it. I have been stitching a little bit here and there and have some posts ready for when the email subscription is active again. Fingers crossed, I'll have time to rouse this blog out of its dormancy sometime this year.

Good Things Come in Threes

At last! I've made decent progress on the crewel sampler. I finished the last of the three large central motifs.

Crewel Sampler (by Elsa Williams): Completed large left motif

I stitched the motif as designed although I added a little bit of dark blue on the blue 'petals'. (I'm not sure what the blue bit is supposed to be!)

If things were like they've been the last few weeks the stitching would end here and the project would look like this:

However, I also finished the pomegranate in the lower right. I changed it up a bit by going from light to dark pink (centre to outside) rather than dark to light as designed. Although I'm not overly fond of rows of chain stitch I do prefer going from light to dark.

But wait, there's more...

I finished the central motif on the bottom row. Hard to believe, I know. That's three motifs completed in one week!

I made some changes to the lower central motif. The leaf outlines were supposed to be chain stitched in the lightest green, but I wanted a little more colour weight so I stitched one side in medium green and one side in light green. I'm pleased with the results.

Crewel Sampler (by Elsa Williams): Working on greens

I also added some yellow centres to the blue lazy daisies that are inside the leaves. The original design called for plain blue lazy daisies without filling.

The central parts of the purple flowers are two different shades. I used the lightest purple from both the original kit and the second kit. I've found that, in general, the shades from the two kits are mostly interchangeable with the exception of the lightest purple.

Crewel Sampler (by Elsa Williams): Another copleted motif

It's nearly finished...yea! One more (small) motif and a bunch of chain stitch borders to go.

I wonder if I can finish it over the next week.

Crewel Sampler (by Elsa Williams): Nearly done

It feels so good to make progress. I want to finish so I can move on to other projects.

  1. What a great design, so many stitches to sample and practice! You've definitely made some good progress and those colours are just lovely.

    1. Thank you, Catherine. It is a nice design. It would be especially good for a beginner to crewel because it's so small. I'm continually amazed that I'm stitching a potentially ~60-year-old kit, but because of the classic design it doesn't feel dated to me.

  2. Looking great! I agree that it does not seem dated. Good luck finding stitching time this weekend.

  3. I liked the chain on the pomegranate - I know, you're not fond of chain stitch, but it's beautifully even and I like the shading. I love how you worked the lower central motif with the leaves and the yellow centres to the lazy daisies. I agree with others here, it doesn't look that dated to me. Nice work! The Rev.
