Spring 2024: Google ended its email subscription service in 2021. I believe I've found a replacement, but haven't had time to test it. I have been stitching a little bit here and there and have some posts ready for when the email subscription is active again. Fingers crossed, I'll have time to rouse this blog out of its dormancy sometime this year.

Thread Painted Royal Blue Bird: Lots of Progress!

I have made some needed fixes and quite a bit of progress on Royal Blue, the thread painted blue bird designed by Trish Burr for Inspirations. I corrected the direction of the feathers under the head (and found some better lighting for taking photos). I hope it's obvious that before is on the left and after is on the right!

Embroidery under the head of a blue thread painted bird has been corrected to fix the direction of the stitching.

I am much happier with the new direction of the stitching on the upper part of the breast.

Next, I worked on the wing without a camera nearby, so there are no in-progress photos. For the embroidery geeks, this photo is much larger than normal so you can see details.

Then it was on to the lower part of the head:

Finally, here's a shot showing the bright blues getting lit up by sunlight. The entire project looks very different depending upon how light hits it. The colours are quite beautiful.

This is actually a fairly simple bird. There aren't any areas where there are lots of shades being stuffed into small spaces. I think it would be a good beginner bird.

  2. For some time I have wanted to try one of Trish Burr's designs but have felt intimidated as I have never mastered drawing. Your little one has given me the determination to have a go. And if it doesn't work out, there's always the bin! But if I don't try, I shall never know if it's something I may find deeply pleasurable.

    1. Erica, I'm so glad that you are considering trying some thread painting. You can do it. I don't draw, either. I have found that the more thread painting I do, the more technique I learn. It can be almost formulaic once you do enough of it, but it requires practice! The more you do the better you get.

This is a pretty straightforward bird, but animals are trickier than flowers. If you have never done any thread painting, you might want to start with some basic flowers before tackling an animal.
